Friendship Never Ends
Gabi and Liz
Gabi and Liz got matched when Liz was age 16. Liz went to a high school for those with special needs and had a difficult family life. As the oldest of four kids, the family looked to Liz to do many things for the family, like shopping, laundry and taking care of the house.
Gabi picked Liz to be matched with because "Liz had the biggest smile that just lit up her face."
For her part, Liz knew she wanted a Big Sister, but she was very shy and quiet. She deferred to the Social Worker's recommendation.
Whenever they would go out to restaurants, Gabi would have Liz practice reading, doing games and learning how to tell time. The two enjoyed all kinds of activities together, from flying kites and walking to going shopping and seeing movies.
Gabi recalls, "I got so much out of being matched with Liz because she needed a Big Sister so much. It's really rewarding when you can be there for a teenager and help them through those difficult years ¾ especially when she has other challenges in life."
"I was lucky to have Gabi to call when I needed to talk and to do things with. She helped me with many things," said Liz.
Liz was Gabi's first Little Sister. Since then, Gabi has had four other matches through JBS. "Each match is unique," Gabi explained. "It's amazing to watch them grow up. It's a place where you are totally accepted and not judged. Both Big and Little Sisters are so welcoming!"
Today, Gabi and Liz talk regularly on the phone and celebrate each other's birthdays and Chanukah together. Both agree their friendship will never end.
